The EU4ETTR project conducted an interesting and valuable site visit to the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Biomethanization Facility and Waste Incineration and Energy Production Facility with the participation of project observer municipalities!
The site visit, where was witnessed the transformation of waste into energy, was quite impressive. At the Biomethanization facility, more than 130 tons of municipal solid waste are processed daily, preventing 81,000 tons of carbon emissions annually and generating 1.4 MW of electricity per hour.
The Waste Incineration and Energy Production Facility, which is the largest waste incineration facility in Europe with Leed Gold certification, surpasses 1.38 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually with its installed capacity of 85 MWh.
The site visit concluded with a brainstorming session with the observer municipalities, highlighting the importance of waste management and energy conversion in the SECAP process.
