The EU4 Energy Transition project hosted a pivotal workshop titled “Mission, Vision, and Strategy for Sustainable Energy and Climate Action” on December 20, 2021. This online event, facilitated via Zoom, brought together key stakeholders from the İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality, Bağcılar Municipality, and other observer municipalities across Türkiye. The workshop aimed to strengthen local government commitments to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and to develop a clear roadmap for achieving sustainable energy goals.
The agenda included a series of expert-led sessions focused on developing strategic visions, decarbonization roadmaps, and actionable strategies for local governments. Notable speakers included Mr. Mindaugas Stonkus, Head of the Energy Efficiency Policy Group at the Lithuanian Ministry of Energy, and Dr. Karl-Ludwig Schibel, President of Climate Alliance.
Participants engaged in discussions on the importance of mission and vision statements in climate action planning, the 2050 Decarbonisation Roadmap, and case studies from EU countries that provided valuable lessons for Turkish municipalities. The workshop also featured a creative "Visioning Exercise," where attendees imagined the future of İstanbul in 2040 and reflected on the steps taken to achieve a sustainable and resilient city.
The workshop concluded with recommendations for advancing local climate policies and reinforcing the role of Turkish municipalities in the global fight against climate change.
