Bağcılar Municipality

Bağcılar is a district on the European side of Istanbul. It is the 5th most populous district among Istanbul's districts.

Bağcılar Municipality has actively engaged in sustainability efforts through its Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan (SECAP). By aligning with European Union strategies for combating climate change, Bağcılar Municipality has committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing climate resilience within its urban framework. The SECAP, initiated to address the potential impacts of global climate change, focuses on developing strategies and implementing measures to mitigate these effects locally. Through this plan, Bağcılar aims to not only meet international environmental standards but also to foster a sustainable and resilient community that contributes positively to global climate action efforts.

Bağcılar Municipality, renowned for its proactive stance on climate change and environmental initiatives, was selected as a pilot municipality for a significant project jointly funded by the European Union and the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development of Germany. This collaboration, initiated three years ago, has been undertaken in partnership with the Central Project Management Agency of the Republic of Lithuania. Through constructive meetings and consensus-building, Bağcılar Municipality has made substantial contributions towards advancing sustainability practices and remains steadfast in its commitment to global environmental objectives.

Bağcılar Municipality has committed to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the district by 40% by the year 2030, as stipulated in the Covenant of Mayors previously signed.
