Balıkesir Municipality gained the status of Metropolitan Municipality after the local elections on March 30, 2014. In addition, studies are being carried out in the field of climate change under the Environmental Protection and Control Department within the Metropolitan Municipality. Under the Department of Environmental Protection and Control, campaigns are organized especially for environmental protection, zero waste management, access to renewable energy sources and increasing environmental awareness.
