Bergama Municipality

The Municipality of Bergama is a local government body of the northern most district of the Metropolitan City of İzmir, the third most populous city of Türkiye. Bergama, home to the ancient city of Pergamon with six cultural layers due its historical legacy of being established on Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Anatolian Beyliks, Ottoman and Republican Era’s of Türkiye, is recognized as the 999th UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014. 
In addition to its rich cultural heritage, Bergama is situated on the fertile soils of Bakırçay Valley, which makes it one of the forthcoming agricultural producers of olive, cotton, tobacco, tomato and diverse fruits and vegetables. 
Furthermore, the supportive nature of resources as well as its geographical position makes the city advantageous for exploiting wind, solar and geothermal energy. The Municipality of Bergama strives to develop into a smart and resilient city by way of adapting and/or mitigating the challenges introduced by climate change and environmental degradation while preserving the universal values and the rich cultural heritage the city possesses.

 There are six key areas of interest the Municipality of Bergama would like to act on: 
1. Climate Action and Adaptation
Implementing policies and initiatives to mitigate climate change impacts. Enhancing urban resilience through green infrastructure and sustainable urban planning.
2. Renewable Energy Transition
Promoting the use of wind, solar, and geothermal energy to reduce carbon emissions. Supporting clean energy investments and infrastructure development.
3. Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security
Encouraging climate-smart agricultural practices to preserve soil health and water resources. Strengthening local food systems to ensure long-term sustainability.
4. Climate Finance and Green Investments
Exploring funding opportunities for sustainable projects and climate initiatives. Collaborating with national and international partners to access climate finance mechanisms.
5. Preservation of Cultural and Natural Heritage
Integrating climate adaptation measures into the protection of UNESCO-listed historical sites. Safeguarding natural ecosystems that contribute to climate resilience.
6. Smart and Sustainable Urban Development
Developing climate-responsive infrastructure and mobility solutions. Utilizing smart city technologies to optimize resource management and reduce environmental impact.
