Çiğli is a district of İzmir province. It exhibits typical Mediterranean climate characteristics. Within it lies the İzmir Bird Paradise, Çiğli, and Menemen districts, home to 589,627 species of birds, known as the world capital of birds.
Çiğli Municipality has taken significant strides in addressing climate change through proactive measures and strategic planning. Committed to sustainable development, Çiğli Municipality has initiated the preparation of its Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan (SECAP) to enhance resilience against climate impacts and promote environmental sustainability. By signing the Covenant of Mayors, Çiğli Municipality has pledged to reduce carbon emissions in alignment with European Union guidelines, demonstrating its dedication to global climate initiatives. In December 2023, Çiğli Municipality published its SECAP, outlining comprehensive strategies and targets aimed at achieving climate resilience and sustainable development. Collaborating with local stakeholders and leveraging international frameworks, Çiğli Municipality aims to integrate innovative solutions and best practices into its SECAP, ensuring a greener and more resilient future for its community.
In 2021, Çiğli Municipality committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030, increasing the use of renewable energy sources, and implementing local measures against climate change by signing the Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy - Europe. They joined the Local Governments for Sustainability Network (ICLEI) and took the lead in establishing the Çiğli Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan (SECAP) Advisory Board, comprising professional organizations, civil society groups, and universities. To finalize the Çiğli SECAP through inclusive methods, they organized Roundtable Meetings, Resilient Cities Symposium, and Climate Action Plan Workshops with contributions from their internal and external stakeholders. In the field of sustainability, they continued their collaborations with Izmir Sustainable Urban Development Network (SKGA), ICLEI, Covenant of Mayors: EU for Energy Transition in Western Balkans and Turkey project (EU4ETTR) for Energy Transformation, and Central Project Management Agency (CPMA). To enhance Çiğli's resilience, they established Turkey's first Disaster Affairs Directorate within their administrative structure. In the context of becoming a Resilient City, they formed the 'Neighborhood Search and Rescue' team to increase social resilience and provided necessary training.
