The duties of the Climate Change and Zero Waste unit of Kartal Municipality are as follows:
- Develop and implement institutional and district-wide projects to enhance institutional capacity, protect the environment, and increase environmental awareness for a climate-resilient city. Ensure the coordination, implementation, and follow-up of these projects.
- Organize and participate in meetings, seminars, panels, conferences, and similar activities to protect the environment and nature and raise environmental awareness in society. Participate in educational, seminar, panel, and conference activities organized by relevant institutions.
- Prepare and distribute printed and/or visual materials (brochures, booklets, surveys, bulletins, portals, etc.) to the public to protect the environment and nature and raise environmental awareness.
- Conduct and organize education and information activities on combating climate change, water and energy efficiency, urban waste recovery and reduction, and other related topics to protect the environment and nature and raise environmental awareness in society.
- Organize and promote environmental activities and campaigns. Ensure the institution is represented by participating in relevant events and organizations.
- Follow national and international projects, new practices, and developments related to the environment, nature, and climate change.
- Investigate environmental pollution and other environmental issues within the district's boundaries, ensuring the detection, follow-up, and elimination of adverse conditions or having them addressed, and apply the necessary legal procedures within the powers granted to our Directorate.
- Conduct necessary inspections for environmental noise, air pollution, odor pollution, water pollution, wastewater pollution, visual pollution, soil pollution, and all other potential environmental issues throughout the district. Inform relevant units, institutions, and organizations by carrying out the necessary legal procedures.
- Inspect solid fuel-burning sites and solid fuels sold within the district. Inform relevant units, institutions, and organizations by carrying out the necessary legal procedures.
- Monitor live music in entertainment venues and respond to live music monitoring requests from other institutions, organizations, and units. Inform relevant units, institutions, and organizations by carrying out the necessary legal procedures.
- Conduct necessary inspections related to evening and night work permit requests for constructions in coordination with the relevant directorate. Inform relevant units, institutions, and organizations by carrying out the necessary legal procedures.
- Examine and address all complaints and requests within the Directorate's authority, ensuring compliance with regulations, carrying out necessary legal procedures, and informing the complainant.
- Examine structures planned for demolition concerning hazardous and non-hazardous waste, conduct necessary inspections, and inform relevant units, institutions, and organizations by carrying out the necessary legal procedures.
- Conduct necessary inspections related to wastewater generated from domestic, industrial, agricultural, and other uses. Inform relevant units, institutions, and organizations by carrying out the necessary legal procedures.
- Fulfill the municipality's obligations regarding waste management (packaging waste, waste batteries and accumulators, waste vegetable oils, waste electrical and electronic equipment, end-of-life tires, etc.) within the framework of relevant legislation.
- Conduct research, make recommendations, and work in coordination with relevant units to regularly collect, transport, recover, and dispose of recyclable waste within the district according to relevant legislation.
- Ensure the necessary work and procedures related to zero waste are carried out in the municipal service building and campuses throughout the district.
- Coordinate and collaborate with licensed firms, relevant institutions, and organizations on collecting, transporting, recovering, and disposing of packaging waste under the Zero Waste Management System. Evaluate incoming requests.
- Coordinate and collaborate with licensed firms, relevant institutions, and organizations on collecting, transporting, recovering, and disposing of waste batteries and accumulators under the Zero Waste Management System. Evaluate incoming requests.
- Coordinate and collaborate with licensed firms, relevant institutions, and organizations on collecting, transporting, recovering, and disposing of waste vegetable oils under the Zero Waste Management System. Evaluate incoming requests.
- Coordinate and collaborate with licensed firms, relevant institutions, and organizations on collecting, transporting, recovering, and disposing of end-of-life tires under the Zero Waste Management System. Evaluate incoming requests.
- Coordinate and collaborate with licensed firms, relevant institutions, and organizations on collecting, transporting, recovering, and disposing of waste electrical and electronic equipment and fluorescent lamps under the Zero Waste Management System. Evaluate incoming requests.
- Coordinate and collaborate with licensed firms, relevant institutions, and organizations on collecting, transporting, recovering, and disposing of textile waste under the Zero Waste Management System. Evaluate incoming requests.
- Conduct research on materials that can be recycled and coordinate with relevant units to implement applications.
- Conduct and organize activities to evaluate organic waste.
- Ensure necessary work under the Zero Waste Management System is carried out in the municipal service building and campuses throughout the district.
- Inspect structures and building accessories (signs, air conditioners, antennas, water tanks, solar panels, etc.) causing visual pollution within the district in terms of aesthetics, material, color, roof and facade coating, lighting, and prevent adverse environmental effects within the framework of Environmental Law No. 2872 and other relevant legislation. Inform relevant units, institutions, and organizations by carrying out necessary procedures.
- Serve on the Aesthetic Board, conducting and organizing necessary work on all issues related to climate change, zero waste, and the environment.
