Yenimahalle Municipality voluntarily joined the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy in 2019, becoming one of over 13,500 municipalities globally and more than ninety in Türkiye to participate. As part of their commitment, they have prepared a Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan (SECAP).
Yenimahalle Municipality in Ankara has the distinction of being the first municipality in the province to prepare its SECAP.
Yenimahalle Municipality is embarking on several ambitious initiatives to enhance environmental sustainability and energy efficiency within its jurisdiction. One key initiative includes establishing an Energy Desk within the municipality. These desks, developed in collaboration with professional organizations and relevant university departments, will offer tailored energy-saving solutions to residents interested in improving their energy efficiency. In addition to carrying out studies to develop solutions to reduce the energy poverty of citizens in the district, Yenimahalle started to meet its own energy needs from the sun with GES (Solar Power Plant) on 5 marketplaces, which it completed its installation in 2024.
Additionally, the municipality plans to design its new childcare facilities as eco-friendly nurseries, integrating sustainable practices into their construction and operation. In line with promoting electric vehicle (EV) usage in the region, Yenimahalle Municipality intends to initiate efforts to install charging stations, thereby encouraging the adoption of electric vehicles. Furthermore, practical training on urban farming will be provided through the establishment of vegetable gardens in suitable parks across the district. To address water conservation, the municipality aims to implement projects for greywater and rainwater harvesting in its service buildings without delay. These proactive measures underscore Yenimahalle Municipality's commitment to sustainable development and climate action, setting a precedent for urban environmental stewardship in Ankara province.
