The 2024 Emissions Gap Report by UNEP emphasizes the urgent need for countries to significantly increase their targets in the new Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) due next year. Current NDCs and policies set the world on a path toward a 2.6-2.8°C temperature rise, with inaction pushing this up to 3.1°C. To shift course toward the 1.5°C goal, emissions reductions of 42% by 2030 and 57% by 2035 are essential.
The report highlights that the 1.5°C target remains technically achievable through major investments in renewable energy, forest conservation, and rapid sectoral transformation. Even slight reductions in warming can make a major difference in terms of lives, economies, and biodiversity.
