Projects of Menteşe Municipality

PROJECTS INVOLVED:

Menteşe Municipality has implemented several key projects focused on sustainability and environmental protection:

Carbon Footprint and Reduction Action Plan:
In 2020, Menteşe launched the “Calculation of the Carbon Footprint in Menteşe Municipality Services and Determination of the Reduction Roadmap” project under the Technical Assistance Program of the South Aegean Development Agency (GEKA). This project involved calculating the carbon footprint from the municipal services and buildings and developing a reduction strategy. In 2023, with the support of GEKA, the municipality initiated the “Menteşe Municipality Climate Change Action Plan” project, which aims to develop a sustainable transportation infrastructure, reduce fossil fuel consumption, promote the use of renewable energy sources such as solar power, and improve water and waste management systems.
Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy:
On June 4, 2024, Menteşe officially signed the Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy, committing to becoming climate-neutral by 2050 and reducing greenhouse gas emissions in line with the Paris Agreement. Menteşe aims to develop a local climate pact by collaborating with citizens, businesses, and other stakeholders to implement urgent actions.
Waste Collection and Zero Waste Applications:
Menteşe established a Waste Collection Center for the collection, sorting, and recycling of specific types of waste. Additionally, the municipality organizes annual waste collection competitions among schools and conducts zero waste and recycling awareness programs.
Department of Climate Change and Zero Waste:
The municipality established the Department of Climate Change and Zero Waste to coordinate efforts in combating climate change and managing waste. Regular meetings are held with the public and civil society organizations to raise awareness and promote active participation.
International Partnerships:
The municipality’s Project Development Department actively works to access various grants and funding opportunities for our sustainability initiatives, supporting the municipality’s international collaboration efforts.
Green Space Management:
With 65.9% of the district covered by forests and 7 square meters of green space per capita, Menteşe contributes to sustainable urban management. All green spaces are irrigated using treated water, helping to preserve natural resources and support Menteşe’s carbon-neutral goal.
City Council:
Through Menteşe’s City Council, the municipality fosters democratic participation, discusses local issues collaboratively, and strengthens partnerships between public institutions and civil society. These councils play a vital role in shaping sustainability and climate action policies.
