Bornova Municipality: Climate Action Vision for a Sustainable Future
Bornova Municipality aims to play an active role in combating climate change at both national and international levels, highlighting the transformative power of local governments. In this context, the municipality adopts a holistic approach encompassing greenhouse gas emission reduction, climate change adaptation, sustainable energy use, green infrastructure, and public awareness.
The actions carried out in line with the 2024–2029 Strategic Plan are supported by renewable energy investments, water management practices, circular economy models, and data-driven decision-making systems. Through collaborations under European Union and other international programs, Bornova continues to strengthen its climate action capacity. In this framework, the development of a Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan (SECAP) serves as a key roadmap to achieving low-carbon development goals. This process focuses on themes such as energy efficiency, green mobility, carbon sinks, and community participation.
Bornova aims to reduce urban vulnerabilities and enhance resilience against climate risks by protecting natural systems and adopting an ecosystem-based planning approach. In this regard, climate adaptation measures, nature-based solutions, and bioregional approaches are integrated into municipal policies. To ensure financial sustainability, the municipality utilizes not only its own resources but also public-private partnerships and international funding mechanisms to support environmental, energy, and adaptation projects. Upholding the principle of just transition, Bornova Municipality develops comprehensive solutions to the climate-related risks that go beyond technical measures and include social and cultural resilience as well.
