Bozkır Women's Initiative Production and Operation Cooperative operates with the aim of reviving a traditional cheese that was once widely produced in the village formerly known as “Midiliç,” located in the Yerköy district of Yozgat, Türkiye. Once a well-known and much-loved local product, the production of this cheese had come to a halt over time. The cooperative relaunched the production by transferring knowledge from the village elders to the younger generations. Now in its third year, the cooperative has also initiated the branding process of this distinctive cheese.
Midiliç cheese stands out among other regional cheeses with its whiter appearance, milder aroma, and distinct flavor profile. Laboratory analyses have shown that the cheese can maintain its quality for over six months without the use of preservatives or additives—demonstrating the strength of its traditional production method.
The history of the village where the cheese is produced adds further value to the product. According to research carried out by the cooperative, in 1924, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk ordered the establishment of the “Midiliçoğlu Farm” in Yerköy, among several other regions, to support the food supply for civilians and the military during the early years of the Republic. The farm remained active until 1950, after which it was closed, and in 1951, it became a settlement area for migrants from the Balkans. Over time, the village came to be known as “Midiliç” in local use, and its official name was changed to Aydıngün in the 1970s. Elderly residents of the village recall a “cheese house” within the farm, from which whey would flow through a channel. During periods of scarcity, mothers would produce curd and cottage cheese from this whey to feed their children.
Today, the cooperative not only preserves this cultural and historical heritage but also contributes to rural development through local production. With a strong narrative and unique qualities, Midiliç cheese continues to gain recognition. The cooperative remains committed to empowering women socially and economically, and actively promotes this traditional product through various platforms.
