City of Karlovac

The City of Karlovac is a middle-sized city (50.000 inhabitants) situated in the center of Croatia, 40 km from Zagreb the capital and only 100 Km away from the Adriatic Sea. Karlovac was founded in 1579 by the Habsburgs as a defence fortress and has been during history and important traffic and economic center: Karlovac is very rich in natural resources such as rivers and potential in geothermal energy. Karlovac has developed all strategical plans towards a green and smart city, www.karlovac.hr..

There are many implemented policies and project in Karlovac  such as the revitalization of the hot water network in the city and wider area; there is a national strategical project in implementation for the flood protection for the Karlovac and Sisak area- River Kupa; The first implemented EU project in this area was the Wastewater Treatment plant  and also the Freshwater aquarium in Karlovac, unique in the region.
Concerning the green and smart priorities, the City of Karlovac joined the EU initiative Covenant of Mayors in 2008 and since then has been preparing and developing policies, strategies and projects that realize the goals of the Karlovac SECAP (2015) focusing on impact of climate change on the local community, considers energy sustainability and acts towards reducing energy consumption and CO2 emissions. Some of the most important and actual projects in this area are: “Use of geothermal energy for heating purposes in the city of Karlovac - PREP4KaGT-1”, “Solarization of institutions of the City of Karlovac (SolariKA)”, Green Luščić- Karlovac as part of the  

Green City Action Plans (“GCAP”) - EBRD Green Cities agenda, Smart City Karlovac and New led lighting- Esco Model in Karlovac under others.
