HORIZON-CL5-2027-02-D2-05
Scope. Projects should improve the adaptability, flexibility and operational efficiency of existing battery recycling processes. They should demonstrate innovative technologies capable of processing mixed input streams, including battery production scrap and different lithium-ion battery chemistries, and recovering high-purity battery-grade materials for reuse in European battery manufacturing.
Sectors. Battery recycling, lithium-ion batteries, critical raw materials, circular economy, hydrometallurgy, pyrometallurgy, waste management, battery manufacturing, resource efficiency and sustainable materials recovery.
Eligible applicants. Legal entity (including from Türkiye).
Key requirements. Projects should: demonstrate recycling technologies capable of handling variable feedstock compositions, including mixed battery chemistries and production scrap; improve black mass processing to recover high-purity materials suitable for reuse in battery manufacturing; optimise hydrometallurgical and/or pyrometallurgical processes to improve recovery rates of critical raw materials and meet EU Batteries Regulation requirements; incorporate advanced sorting and pre-treatment technologies, including digitalised solutions where appropriate; conduct techno-economic assessments (TEA) and life-cycle assessments (LCA) to demonstrate improvements in energy efficiency, environmental performance and economic viability; address scalability, commercialisation and deployment through a credible exploitation strategy and business plan; consider the Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) framework and contribute to the objectives of the European Partnership on Batteries (BATT4EU).
Funding & duration. Funding rate up to 100% under Horizon Europe rules. Project budgets: 18,8 mln. Eur. Project duration: 36–48 months.
